Description

Stop at Clapton Table for refreshment, feeding and changing. Slings will work better for cafe stop but I know this won't be possible for all.

'Bring Your Baby' Guided London Walks are sensitively devised to suit parents and carers of even the tiniest babies to enjoy London’s history. We can stop whenever you like to feed and change - without the stress of feeling you are holding up the group.

This walk explores the Lower Clapton area of Hackney. We start by locating the site of Brooke House, once home to numerous high-status Tudors and Stuarts, and once owned by Henry VIII himself. We have historical evidence that Mary I, Elizabeth I and Jane Seymour all visited the house, but our women who lived there are:
- Margaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox, niece of Henry VIII, grandmother of James I
- Elizabeth De Vere, Countess of Oxford
- Lady Arbella Stuart, granddaughter of Margaret Douglas
- Sara Williams, servant girl ‘exorcised’ at the house in 1586

We then discover the locations where several women lived and worked around Lower Clapton:
- Catherine Booth and her daughters, Salvation Army founders
- Barbara Windsor, acting legend
- Elizabeth Chivers - murderer
- Mary Howitt - wrote ‘The Spider & the Fly’
- Fenella Fielding - 'Carry On' actress
- The Mothers Hospital - maternity hospital until the 1980s
- Louisa Courtauld - silversmith and member of the famous Courtauld dynasty
- Mary Hays, 18th century feminist writer & friend of Mary Wollstonecraft
- Dr Elizabeth Wilks, "No vote, no tax" doctor and suffragette
- Maie Ash, music hall star
- Katharine Engel, ran a bakery shop and changed their name to Ingle after WW! caused German shops to be attacked. Her son Percy was born in Clapton.
- Shirley Porter, led Westminster Council in the 1980s but lost her ‘dame’ title after a scandal called ‘homes for votes’. Her father founded Tesco.
