Description
Halfway stop for lunch/refreshment at Leadenhall Market. You are not obligated to buy food, or you can also buy food elsewhere or bring a packed lunch. Baby change and toilet at the start of the walk at The Royal Exchange, which we will schedule at the start of the walk, although if you arrive early and use it that will be even better! There is also a baby change in Marks and Spencer near our stop at Leadenhall Market.
'Bring Your Baby' Guided London Walks are sensitively devised to suit parents and carers of even the tiniest babies to enjoy London’s history. We can stop whenever you like to feed and change - without the stress of feeling you are holding up the group.
This walk is written and guided by City of London guide Sue Doe.
Coffee houses in 18th century London were a vital cog in the wheels of business. From the many that catered for the City’s population sprang the Stock Exchange, Lloyds of London, the Baltic Exchange, auctioneers, scientific and philosophical societies and clubs. They brought people together, to talk and share ideas and news. They acted as employment exchanges, post offices and travel agents.
The alleyways of Cornhill were the site of eight of the most important, and there are still signs of them in the City today.
I’ll tell some stories of the businesswomen, and weave in those from Hackney who have emerged from recent research.
